Big Car Names: What is behind them?
Audi

Resigning his work with ‘Benz’, August Horch, a German engineer founded ‘Horch &Cie’, a joint-venture car company. Later, he was expelled by his partners.
When he started manufacturing cars from another city under the brand name ‘Horch’, his partners filed a suit against him and Horch was forced to hunt for another brand name.
One day, as Horch was discussing about brand name with Frank, his then partner, his problem was solved in a flash – through Frank’s son!
“Dad, instead of ‘Horch’ why not keep the name ‘Audi’”, said the little boy, who was doing his Latin homework. Horch means ‘Listen’ in German language and it means the same in Latin!!!
ALFA

The brand name ALFA is the acronym of the Italian name ‘Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili (Lombard Automobile Factory, Public Company). Romano Cattaneo, a draughtsman, was assigned the job of designing a badge for the company. One day, as he was waiting for his tram, his eyes caught the flag of Milan and he adopted the ‘Red Cross’ from the flag. He was fascinated by the ‘serpent that devoured humans’ in the emblem of a ‘House’ that ruled Milan. Including both the ‘Red Cross’ and ‘the serpent that devoured humans’, he developed a badge and gave it to the company. When the unimpressed Board Members questioned about a snake in the badge, he pacified them saying, “Like the serpent, our company should devour our competitors”.
Volkswagen

Volkswagen means “people’s car” in German language.
After World War I, the economy of Germany was in shambles. On assuming leadership, Adolf Hitler brought in some reformations. One such effort was Hitler’s challenge to automobile companies at the 1933 Berlin Auto Show, to manufacture a cheap car for ordinary citizens of Germany. In 1934, after discussing with Hitler, the renowned Porsche car company agreed to design models of cheap cars. The government started manufacturing Volkswagen cars in 1937.
After Germany was defeated in World War II, the British took over the Volkswagen Company. When they couldn’t manage it, they requested various car companies like Ford, Fiat etc to run Volkswagen. As none agreed, the British handed over the company back to Germany ‘magnanimously’!
Later Volkswagen made a record sale of 21 million cars!!!
Volkswagen’s logo was designed by Frans Xavier R.., an employee of Porsche!
BMW

The blue and white in the centre of the logo represent the propeller of an aircraft – signifying the white blades cutting through the blue sky.
During World War I, BMW was manufacturing aircraft engines for the German Air Force. At the end of World War I, when Germany was prohibited from manufacturing aircrafts, BMW was in a crisis. If they had to survive, they had to change their products and tried different things. After a stint in manufacturing anti-lock brakes, engines for motorcycles and motorcycles, they finally made a hit in manufacturing cars…!

After a stint in manufacturing anti-lock brakes, engines for motorcycles and motorcycles, they finally made a hit in manufacturing cars…! by: Sam |

After a stint in manufacturing anti-lock brakes, engines for motorcycles and motorcycles, they finally made a hit in manufacturing cars…! by: Sam |

After a stint in manufacturing anti-lock brakes, engines for motorcycles and motorcycles, they finally made a hit in manufacturing cars…! by: Sam |

After a stint in manufacturing anti-lock brakes, engines for motorcycles and motorcycles, they finally made a hit in manufacturing cars…! by: Sam |

After a stint in manufacturing anti-lock brakes, engines for motorcycles and motorcycles, they finally made a hit in manufacturing cars…! by: Sam |

After a stint in manufacturing anti-lock brakes, engines for motorcycles and motorcycles, they finally made a hit in manufacturing cars…! by: Sam |
